Hey there! I'm Terri, the force behind Cornwall Hypnobirthing & Hypnotherapy and resident Doula Trainer here at TBU Academy. And let me tell you, my years of experience bring a ton of knowledge to the table when it comes to training you to become an incredible Doula through TBU Academy.

I've been in the education game for a while, working with adults, young folks, and the cutest little babies you can imagine. All those years have given me some serious insights into how people learn and the best ways to pass on information.

But that's not all. I also walked the talk as a Doula myself. I trained as a Doula 8 years ago and have been working in the field ever since. That means I've got firsthand experience in supporting birthing individuals and families during this incredible journey.

And hey, I'm not one to settle. I've been on a continuous learning spree, diving into professional development and keeping my knowledge up to date. I've completed a ton of CPD (Continuing Professional Development) to ensure that I'm always on top of the latest advancements and practices in the Doula world. How to become a Doula

Step 1

So our full birth doula training kicks off with online prerecorded training which our trainees work through in their own time. They can do this evenings, weekends, on their lunch break or in the dead of night. It’s super flexible to fit around any lifestyle!

When working through this, you will be in a training group on Facebook where you can share your thoughts and have discussion with your fellow trainees. This is also where you will complete associated activities.

Step 2

There are activities to go alongside the modules. These are a mixture of exploring resources, creating infographics, recording a short video explaining a topic, researching and gathering statistics.

None of the activities involve essay writing. We believe that this training and this work should be accessible to those who don’t necessarily learn in the way that traditional education focuses on. We are well aware that specialist fields such as birth work often attract those who are neurodiverse and we want to ensure that no matter who you are, you can find a way to show us how well you understand the subject matter.

All activities are submitted at any time from the start of the training into the training FB group.

Step 3

The course finishes with a training weekend. This is where you will meet Terri, and the whole group gets together to take a deep dive in to Doula life and extend your learning after the online content.

Each day there will be a structured plan to insure we get the best out of time. The day begins at 9.30am and ends at 4.30pm, with small breaks and an hour lunch break which gives you some time refresh, refuel and explore the surroundings if you wish.

We will cover a number of different topics, situations and scenarios over the 2 days, and the content will be heavily focused on modern day Doulaing – what that looks like, and giving you a deep understanding what Doula life is like. Throughout the weekend there will be open discussion, paired work, group work, listening and note taking. There will be a range of honest, open and sometimes difficult conversations, but also humour, laughter and light-heartedness.

The weekend will be jam packed full of essential knowledge and will really round up all your learning so that you leave feeling confident and fully prepared to begin your Doula journey.

Step 4

At the weekend, you’ll be provided with a Doula manual and as long as your activities from the training are complete, you’ll receive access to all the resources and the main Birth worker community on FB.

Yes! You get out what you put in with any small business and if you begin without much time to devote to it then expect it to start slow. The more time and work invested into it, the faster the trajectory towards a steady stream of clients. Some of our gang do this work alongside full time jobs, families etc and others do this as their sole income. The amount you can earn varies based on what services you provide, how often you provide them, the prices that you charge and how much marketing you do to increase the chances of being seen by potential clients.
Full training folk will be invited to join a FB group with their fellow trainees and access to the online modules on. the day the course start date. They will then receive their resources and access to the main group upon completion of the course.
No, we believe in making the training accessible to as many as possible which is why we offer payment plans of up to 12 months for our. Payments must be made as agreed and missed payments caught up on ASAP alongside clear communication. Failure to keep up with payments will result in removal from the community and permission to use TBU resources denied.
Full training involves practical activities involving research, creating content and explaining aspects of birth throughout the online modules as well exploring your own thoughts and feelings around birth. When these are completed to a high standard and any necessary feedback given, then the trainees will receive their certificate of completion.
Full training groups are given access once they have completed their training.
TBU doulas have access to:
-a 55 page workbook that can be given in printed form or sent electronically to clients. The front cover of this can be changed to suit your branding as long as the TBU logo is displayed on this. Separate handouts from this can be given instead of the full book if you prefer to use alongside your content.
-Contract examples and Antenatal class plans
-Resources PDFs on various special circumstances for you to send to your clients for easy recommendations of additional reading for them where relevant.
-Printable teaching resources for use in your antenatal sessions.
There is no requirement to use ANY of the TBU resources if you are passionate about making everything yours.
Not at all! If you are passionate about providing inclusive birth education to birthers and their birth teams then this is the job for you! If you are willing to put in the work it takes to start your own business, network and learn all the new skills involved in setting up and running a business (with our training and expertise to help you along the way) then you can absolutely make this work for you!
Not particularly! We are passionate about our doulas feeling free to run their business the way that they choose. We simply want a community of safe and inclusive birth workers who are respectful of others, promote informed choice and are always willing to learn and better themselves, you can read our terms and conditions here.

Online Modules

Once your training beginnings you’ll get access to our recorded modules to work through in your own time. The modules take around 3 months to work through around work and your life.

Activites

There are a total of 16 activities to go alongside the modules. These are a mixture of exploring resources, creating infographics (like. the ones in the example photo), recording a short video explaining a topic, researching and gathering statistics and things that will a) show your understanding of the training modules and b) help you practise the skills you will use day to day as a doula.

The Face-Face Weekend

Attending the live face - face weekend is the last piece of the puzzle.

Here you’ll find out how to put everything you’ve learnt so far into practise and be a kickers doula.

Once you’re fully trained you are welcomed into the main TBU Birthworkers Group alongside all the other TBU Academy Instructors and Doulas. This is where you can access their incredible expertise.

Whether it’s help to find resources for a client with a special circumstance you’ve never come across before or assistance in working out what local maternity policies mean and what alternatives might be, this gang will have some info for you!

We have a group full of hypnobirthing instructors, midwives, doulas, instructors, bf supporters and various other roles, both related to birth and parenting and in other areas.

We hold monthly calls, open to all instructors where we can all either catch up and support each other, share information on particular topics or have a formal masterclass.

We hold weekly drop in sessions where you can come along and bounce ideas and ask any questions you have.

Masterclasses are sometimes facilitated by TBU Academy and other times we welcome outside guests to share their expertise. These are all recorded so you can catch up on anything that takes your fancy once you join the gang!

You can lean on this gang for support no matter what, they have such big hearts and an amazing amount of knowledge and experience. This gang is the birth worker gang of dreams!
